Pediatric Advanced Life Support is a class designed for Advanced Care Providers and offers the opportunity to manage the first few minutes of care for a critical or near critical child. A combination of lectures and skill teaching stations help the learned to develop the confidence and attitude to care for sick children.
Course objectives
| To enable participants to recognize unstable children and to begin aggressive resuscitation before an arrest occurs. | |
| To teach key resuscitation skills, including bag-and-mask ventilation, endotracheal intubation, intravenous and intraosseous needle placement, familiarity with pediatric drug doses, and recognition and management of common pediatric dysrhythmias. | |
| To promote an organized response to critically ill or injured children, so that key interventions are accomplished in timely fashion while preparations are undertaken to assure rapid transfer to a PICU or other site of definitive care. | |
| To assist providers with management of the tragedy of a child's death. |
Target Audience
| This class focuses on pediatric care in the inpatient setting. Physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists who practice in an emergency department, pediatric ward or ICU, operating room, or other inpatient setting where children may receive care are encouraged to enroll in this class. Pediatric dentists and pharmacists who participate in pediatric resuscitations may also benefit from this class. | |
| This class presumes pre-existing familiarity with pediatric norms as well as common pediatric illnesses or injuries. Consequently it does meet the educational needs of Advanced Prehospital Providers. The PALS class also assumes the availability of blood gases, X-rays, blood bank, and other hospital resources which are often unavailable to paramedics. |
Classes Location
Due to construction at Underwood Memorial Hospital the course location will be announced in the confirmation letter and begin at 8 am and usually conclude by 4:00 pm
